A whopping €3,250 was collected for BEBSK e.V. at this year's DOC in Nuremberg. After the summer break, Teleon CEO Mark Lansu surprised branch manager Jane Morgenthal and presented her with the obligatory check.
"It's always a great gift for us. Especially as a small association, we are very happy when companies appreciate our almost exclusively voluntary work and support us,” says Ms. Morgenthal.
Fundraising campaign enters its 5th year
Since 2017, we have been inviting guests to our ice cream bar at our DOC stand and at the same time raising funds for the BEBSK e.V. (Bundesvereinigung Eltern blinder und sehbehinderter Kinder e.V. - a federal association of blind and visually impaired children).
Helping others help themselves
The BEBSK e.V. is an association of parents who have made it their task to share their experiences with other affected people and to support them in any situation in life.
Since 1995, families have been volunteering throughout the Federal Republic to give affected families a bit of hope for a bright future. To this end, they organise, among other things, cross-regional sports and music weekends, family excursions to high ropes courses in forests or farm visits.
Because BEBSK is financed exclusively through donations and grants, we want to use the DOC’s forum to draw attention to the small association that is 100%-run by volunteers!
100% of the proceeds from the donation boxes go to BEBSK e.V.
By now, the BEBSK e.V. has grown to more than 610 members. The fact that the association continues to grow shows us that we are on the right track and that this voluntary commitment deserves the greatest amount of respect and is needed in society, in particular.
Forum, contact and further information
In the BEBSK online forum, members and guests can discuss all topics that concern blind and visually impaired children, aids/ tools etc. You can register here: forum.bebsk.de
Email (main office): geschaeftsstelle@bebsk.de
Further information about BEBSK is available here.

Teleon Surgical’s CEO, Mark Lansu, talks about the company’s vision for achieving sustainability in eye care
What is your vision for achieving sustainability in eye care?
Sustainability goes far beyond eye care and is more an attitude towards the kind of future world we want for us, for our children, and our grandchildren. At Teleon, we have made it one of the three main pillars of our corporate vision and that means not only designing sustainable products and solutions for eye care, but also becoming a sustainable organization as a whole.
What steps has Teleon taken towards achieving sustainability goals?
In 2019, we built one of the most modern IOL manufacturing plants in the world in Spankeren, the Netherlands; it is completely free of fossil fuel use. An intelligent building design and architecture ensures we use as little energy as possible both for our processes and for heating and cooling. I invite you to come and see what we are achieving here!
Have any events affected your sustainability goals?
The current geopolitical events shaking up the world are going to have a drastic influence on how we look at sustainability, and they are already having a huge impact on sourcing and distributing energy, which is the lifeblood of every economy. This also drives us to become completely fossil fuel free and reach carbon net zero even faster.
Which sustainability-focused groups are you working with?
Last January, we became a signatory of The Climate Pledge, a commitment for businesses and organizations to take collective action to tackle the world’s greatest crisis, and to work together to build a safe and healthy planet for future generations. So far, 315 businesses have joined, including Microsoft and Unilever. Companies and organizations that sign The Climate Pledge agree to three areas of action:
I believe that joining the climate pledge underlines our commitment to sustainability across Teleon, and stresses the fact that we have chosen a carbon net zero strategy as one of our central company goals.

With the ACUNEX
The innovative company from Spankeren (Netherlands) received the Parel Award 2022 on May 19th from the deputy mayor of the municipality of Rheden, Gea Hofstede, and the director of the Nijmegen Economic Board, Rijn Platteel.
Deputy Mayor Hofstede: “I am pleased that an innovative company like Teleon is based in the Rheden. It's a company we can be proud of as a region. Teleon meets local and regional ambitions, such as the expansion of the sustainable economy. With their modern production and research facility in Spankeren, they contribute to the employment and strengthening of the health sector in the Arnhem-Nijmegen region.” John van Sambeek, representatitive of the Economic Board, is also very proud of Teleon: "It is very good for the health care sector that such an innovative company is based in Lifeport."
Teleon Surgical has kept many business processes in-house, making it one of the last independent manufacturers of IOLs – intraocular lenses - in the world. A total of 150 employees work for the company. According to Van Sambeek, this is one of the company's greatest strengths. “Because the company focuses development and production at the Spankeren site, our region can make a difference in the field of intraocular lenses. Patients wordwide can rely on 30 years of experience and expertise of this Dutch company.”
Sustainable commitment to a healthy future
In 2019, Teleon opened a new commercial building built entirely sustainably. Heat pumps are used instead of gas. This is one of the ways in which the company demonstrates its social commitment. According to CEO Mark Lansu, this is one of Teleon's drivers: “We care a lot about our environment. We want to help people, now and in the future. In order to achieve this, we make a contribution to a healthy future. The exclusive focus on sales and profit does not contribute to this. Therefore, mindfulness for people and the environment is an essential part of Teleon’s longtime goals and philosophy."
The new building is also the place where the Parel Award was presented. All staff were present and The Economic Board was given a tour. “We have not yet been able to celebrate the opening of the building, so this is the first event at the new location!”
Eighteenth award ceremony with a new name
This is the eighteenth time that The Economic Board has presented the Parel Award. After being called "Parel van de Regio" - "Pearl of the Region" for years, it was renamed "Parel van Lifeport" this year. The award thus has a stronger connection to the healthy and sustainable life that the region stands for.

Almost every year (2020 is the exception of the rule), more than six million people clad in tight-fitted bodices and H-shaped suspenders visit Munich for a traditional festivity known as Oktoberfest proudly branded as the world‘s largest fair.
This year, the impact of COVID-19 is undoubtedly dramatic: no Oktoberfest. Furthermore, ESCRS goes virtual.
If you have spent any time on social media in the last few months, you have inevitably seen a host of breathless articles opining on how “Coronavirus Will Change XYZ Forever.” Maybe, maybe not, because it is also human nature to overcome all obstacles and to break new ground.
Our planned “Mini-Oktoberfest” at our brand-new factory site clashed on numerous levels with the stricter travel regulations, BUT it will not be cancelled. We are going virtual as well:
2nd October 2020

The ACUNEX® VARIOMAX multifocal lenses for presbyopia corrections combine the optical advantages of multifocal segment optics with 3.0 dpt addition (MAX3) with those of the state-of-the-art, glistening-free hydrophobic IOL material of the ACUNEX® family of lenses (NoGLIS).
The hydrophobic IOL makes use of the functional design and optical principle of the LENTIS® Mplus MIOL*, which has proven itself in more than 500,000 implantations worldwide for more than 10 years.
The main benefits of these modern, multifocal segment optics is the use of much more light energy when compared to MIOL with diffractive optical ring designs. As a result, reflections, glare / halos or other light phenomena that may occur during twilight or backlight are minimised and vision with higher contrast is maximised for all distances.

As in the past two years, ice cream – and this year popcorn, too – was diligently distributed for charity at the Teleon booth. A total of nearly 1,000 € in donations was collected and, once more, we matched and doubled it to reach 2,000.00 €. On the trade fair’s last day Teleon CEO Mark Lansu handed over the full donations box to Jonathan, who had travelled to Nuremberg with his family specifically for this occasion. Jonathan's family has been volunteering for the BEBSK e.V. (Bundesvereinigung Eltern blinder und sehbehinderter Kinder e.V. - a federal association of blind and visually impaired children) for many years.
Jonathan proudly accepted the full donation box on behalf of BEBSK e.V. from our CEO Mark Lansu himself.
Almost every cent still benefits the children directly at the association that was founded in 1995. That has been convincing us to use the DOC forum for two years now to draw attention to the small association of volunteers, which is financed exclusively through donations and grants and a few members’ fees. And so while in the course of this year's donations the funds collected were slightly lower than last year's, we still managed to double the result in 2017. The donations were collected directly at the Teleon booth in mobile donation boxes as well as the large donation box at the ice cream truck.
The BEBSK e.V. (Bundesvereinigung Eltern blind- und sehbehinderter Kinder e.V.) is an association of parents who have made it their task to share their experiences with other affected persons and to support them in all situations of life. Since 1995, these families have been involving themselves as volunteers to ‘help others to help themselves’ and give affected families hope for a bright future. By now, nearly 900 permanent members are organised in this small association.
The federal association sees itself as an initial point of contact for families and helps those affected individually and as a community. The focus always lies on blind or severely visually impaired children, for whom, among other things, the members organise cross-regional weekends full of sports and musical activities, family excursions to high-ropes courses in forests or farm visits. The aim is to counteract the permanent risk of exclusion and isolation of families and children. Furthermore, the work is directed at strengthening and supporting parents in their knowledge and position by offering seminars on legal matters or special techniques for the blind.
The BEBSK and Teleon would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all donors who helped achieve this great result on site!

IOL case study by Patrick Versace, MD
In the last ten years we have witnessed the growing popularity and range of multifocal IOLs.
Nevertheless, conventional MIOLs in particular, with rotationally symmetrical, diffractive optical systems, are associated with side effects such as reduced contrast sensitivity, increased visual aberrations, halos, glare and negative dysphotopsia. In some cases, patients feel so disturbed by these occurrences that they decide to have an IOL replacement.
Replacing a multifocal IOL with LENTIS® Comfort can help prevent postoperative problems with dysphotopsia and glare. The present case study shows that patients who are dissatisfied with the visual results after the implantation of a conventional multifocal IOL can greatly benefit from an IOL replacement with a LENTIS® Comfort, as the latter virtually guarantees an expanded field of vision without photic phenomena.
